Vyžuonos botanical reservation in Utenos region minicipality

Vyžuonos Botanical Reservation protected by the Municipality was established on 27 September 2001 by the decision of the Council of Utena region Municipality. The area of this reservation is 5.6 ha. More than 90 % of the territory of Vyžuonos Botanical Reservation is occupied by marshes (intermedia te type and highmoors prevail, few lowland moors and swampy forests). The rest part of the territory is occupied by forests, among which soggy black-alder groves and pinewoods prevail. There are two kinds of marshes of European importance i n the reservation: springy marshes with rare yellow marsh saxifrages and intermediate marshes. It is necessary to emphasize the naturalness of Vyžuonos Botanical Reservation and biotopes of its environment. The survived marshes are absolutely primeval, they are not affected by any economic activities. It is a real pearl on rather urbanized landscape from Vyžuonos to Užpaliai. Around one third of all Lithuanian plants were registered in the reservation (even 530 species excluding moss): totally around 1500 species of wild flora grow in Lithuania. There was found even 13 species of plants, 3 species of mushrooms and 5 species of animals included into Lithuanian Red Book in Vyžuonos Botanical Reservation. Two more species of plants included into Lithuanian Red Book were detected on the bank of Lake Balčys.  Great concentration of rare species on a very small area proves an exceptional importance of the territory to biovariety.
